HYPERLIMINAL:
EXPLORING IN-BETWEENNESS
The Artwork, 2017 to current
Stylistically falling in the continuum between representation and abstraction, HyperLiminal began as a series of multimedia artworks in 2017 and continues to evolve currently. The artist’s decades-long explorations into issues of the vulnerability/resiliency of living, interacting organisms and their strategies to defend and survive are the roots of this body of work. Under the lens of liminality (the barely perceptible intermediate state, phase, or condition that exists “In-between”) Nobbe further explores transdisciplinary concepts of human ecology and the metaphorical relationships of the human Body and planet Earth.
The Inter-media installation by Kathryn Nobbe and Philip Blackburn, 2021
HyperLiminal: Exploring In-Betweenness , is an interrelated, multilayered, artistic collaboration between visual artist Kathryn Nobbe and sound-artist Philip Blackburn. Created specifically for the exhibition, Blackburn's soundscape Skin + Breath is broadcasted in the gallery through his intricate handcrafted and illuminated birch bark speakers. Evoking a sense of both natural occurrence and strategic design,
the artists' collaboration involves unexpected juxtapositions of 2D and 3D artwork, constructed and sampled sound,
tactile materials installed on the floor, and subtle, earthy scents of nature.
